Title: A Prayer for Them
Author: paynesgrey
Rating: G
Genre: Drama
Word Count: 388
Warnings/Notes: No warnings. Post-canon universe. Written for the "Whispered Prayer" theme at
firsttweak.
Summary: Sometimes Kagome goes to the well, just to say hello.
Sometimes the old well calls to her.
Kagome has lived in the Feudal Era for months now, happily adjusting to the more rustic way of life as Inuyasha’s wife, as well as one of the village miko. She’s been more than accepted in the village, gaining new friends and family as she leaves her other family behind in the future.
She can’t forget them, and she can’t help but miss them. So, she visits the old well. She follows the path in the forest toward the well and past the tree where Inuyasha had slept for 50 years. She follows the call of the cool breeze, and she listens to the leaves as they rustle and whisper around her.
Stopping at the well, she can no longer feel the energy that folded her through time in a starry blue conduit. Some residual energy buzzes in her veins, but sometimes she thinks it’s more a memory than the actual energy of the well.
She misses them. Tears threaten to spill from her eyes as she places a hand on the roots overtaking the well. She closes her eyes, wishing she could reach through time to see them, and she whispers a prayer for them - for their good health and for their safety. She hopes they do not miss her as much as she misses them. She hopes they have moved on and know that she is happy where she is.
Kagome sucks in a breath when she feels soft, familiar arms circling around her waist. His breath warms her shoulder as he snuggles against her. She sees his silver hair in the corner of her eye. He whispers against her ear, “So here you are.”
“Yep, I came… to say hello,” she says, and he chuckles.
“You’re crying, woman. That’s some hello,” Inuyasha says.
“I just miss them,” Kagome says with a shrug.
He turns her around and rests his hands on her shoulders. He peers into her eyes, looking for doubt, looking for darkness. He won’t find it. He’ll only find love, and maybe some nostalgia.
“You don’t regret coming here?” he asks, and she takes his hand in reassurance.
Kagome smiles. “Of course not. I’m right where I’m supposed to be.” She pauses and then adds, “I’m right where they would want me to be.”
