Shiori can feel her hands balling into fists from anger. She knows she hasn’t traveled with Kohaku long, and maybe her feelings are getting in the way, but she can’t believe he would back out on the bat youkai now.

She can understand he’s impatient to search out whatever unknown nemesis from Azuna’s power, but even if he believes there isn’t another moment to wait, surely he considers his duty to the bat youkai? If Kohaku leaves without her back to his village, aren’t they traveling in parallel? His home is surely on the way to the Sacred Waterfall in the Northern mountains. So why is he leaving now?

Then, Shiori realizes something. She is meant to part from Kohaku all along. He has found the bat youkai Elder’s successor, and she’s sure that she’s only being selfish now that he wants to return to his home and then start this new mission.

“Shiori-chan…” His voice draws her out of her thoughts, and she doesn’t realize she’s shaking. “What is it?”

“I’m...I’m sorry,” she says, and she wipes a tear away. “I was angry when I realized you’d be leaving me.”

She watches as Kohaku’s brow lifts in shock at her words.

“It’s what you intended to do all along.”

“Shiori-chan,” he says, and he moves slowly toward her. She feels a tremor in her body as his hand rests on her shoulder. “I will be with you and the bat youkai up until you pass by my sister’s village, and then we will separate.”

She nods, still dreading the actual time when they part.

And even worse, if Shiori ever believes she should tell Kohaku how she feels, she knows now that she doesn’t have much time left to keep holding back, regardless of what their futures entail.
